New Malaysia Coins 2012

Malaysia introduced a series of new coins ready to be circulated by early next year, two decades after the existing coins were launched.

The new series the five cents, ten cents, 20 cents and 50 cents coins the third since 1967, are themed after the nature, flora and fauna and traditional handicraft.

"Not only do they look good but also are more efficient in terms of weight and size," Central Bank governor, Zeti Akhtar Aziz told the press.

The coins also have better security features making them difficult to replicate

She said the new coins are smaller, lighter and have features that make it easier for the visually impaired to be distinguish the different denominations. The central bank would give vendors of cash handling machines six months from now to calibrate their machines to accept both old and new coins.

The existing coins, themed after Malaysian traditional games, will be gradually phased out.
